When Should You Call a Plumber?

If your home or place of business has a plumbing issue, you’ll likely have to call a plumber. A DIY attempt to fix the problem might only make it worse.

  • If your faucet drips, you could spend hours trying to repair it to no avail. A leaky faucet is often an indication that a larger problem exists.
  • If your bathtub won’t drain, the clog will only worsen over time. Contact a plumber to immediately clear the obstruction. He’ll also check to make sure there isn’t an overarching issue that is responsible for the clog.
  • If your home experiences inconsistent or poor water pressure, the supply line might be faulty. Lean on a plumber for an accurate diagnosis and remedy.
  • Perhaps your pipes freeze in the colder months. If such a scenario arises, a plumber can help prevent burst pipes and avoid a mess that causes extensive water damage.
  • Though you might think you can unclog a toilet, your effort might result in a mere temporary fix. Sometimes, more than a plunger is necessary. An experienced plumber can break up the clog without scratching the porcelain or causing other damage.

First Steps

If you experience a plumbing emergency, your first step is to shut off the water flow. Remain calm, find the building’s water valve, move it to the “off” position and the flow of water will stop. Yet the damage caused by some plumbing emergencies will not be mitigated by merely turning off the building’s water valve. If a pipe has burst and it has no specific shut-off valve, turn off the building’s master shut-off valve. It is positioned by the water meter along the outside of the building.

Contact Your Local Plumber

The next step is to call a reputable Central Jersey plumber (like Arctic Air Conditioning!) and describe your plumbing emergency in detail. Explain exactly what the problem is and get an ETA. An experienced plumber will study the idiosyncrasies of your building’s unique plumbing issue.

Plumbers Can Help with More than Emergencies

It is prudent to schedule a plumbing inspection from time to time. An inspection will provide critical insight into the integrity of your building’s pipes. The plumber might uncover weak points in the plumbing system, faulty pipes that need to be replaced, or any number of other red flags that indicate a plumbing crisis is looming.
