Fixing Low Water Pressure

If everyone on your street suffers from low water pressure…

The best thing you can do is contact your supplier and make a complaint. Gathering signatures on a petition may also help your cause.

If you only experience low water pressure at one faucet…

Disassemble it to check for a clogged aerator, dislodged washer, or other flow restriction. Turn the supply valve under the sink counterclockwise to fully open it. If this doesn’t help, close the valve by turning it clockwise, remove the supply tube, and check the tube for any obstructions.

If you only experience low water pressure at one shower head…

Disassemble it to check for a clogged aerator, dislodged washer, or other flow restriction. Look for a restrictor inside the shower head (a rubber or brass disk) and remove it.

If low water pressure exists throughout the whole house…

Locate the water meter near the street. Make sure both valves are fully open by turning them counterclockwise. If this doesn’t help, locate the main water shut-off valve and turn it counterclockwise to fully open it. While you’re here, look for a water pressure regulator, which may need to be adjusted. This job is best left to a professional plumber.

Frequently Asked Questions

The normal pressure for most residential well systems is between 40 and 50 PSI.

Common causes of water pressure include:

  • Clogged filter
  • Failing well pump
  • Lost air in the pressure tank
  • Broken plumbing pipe

The average pump lasts between 8 and 15 years.

This is known as short cycling. A waterlogged pressure tank typically causes this. It may also be related to a leak in the plumbing system or an issue with the pressure switch.
