Why Is My Furnace So Loud?

Furnaces make noise when they’re in operation. However, common sounds of operation are little more than background noise that nearly any homeowner has long since grown accustomed to.

So what’s that clank you’ve been noticing recently when your furnace kicks on? Or is the whistle that has developed over the last few weeks quickly becoming unbearable?

Odd sounds are one of the surest indicators of a serious need for repair, and most sounds clearly indicate a specific issue. Why is this important? Because understanding how to identify the signs and odd sounds coming from your furnace can tell you when it’s time to call the professionals.

3 Common Causes of a Loud Furnace

A furnace that needs repair can make a number of sounds, most of which indicate a specific issue or series of issues:

1. Clanking or banging. A loud banging when your furnace is in operation can mean a component in your system has become damaged or come loose. This is a particularly urgent problem, as loose components can cause further damage to your system and can eventually lead to a need for replacement if left unaddressed.

2. Whistling or whining. A high-pitched whistle or whine often means there’s a ductwork issue. Gaps in your ducts can cause a whistle that’s both obnoxious and detrimental to your unit’s efficiency. A clogged or dirty filter can also cause whistling, as your furnace starts pulling air from any gap or hole it can find. Check your filter and make sure you’ve changed it recently before calling for repair.

3. Screeching. A particularly maddening sound from your heating system, a screech tells us that an issue has most likely occurred with the blower motor. If it has become damaged, loose, or lacks lubrication and is generating excess friction, a screech will ensue.

4. Humming or buzzing. If you hear a buzzing or loud humming sound coming from your furnace, that typically means your furnace has an issue with its electrical wiring. You’ll want to check these components if you hear humming or buzzing coming from your furnace:

  • Inducer motor
  • Blower motor
  • Transformer

Having a problem not listed here? No problem! Whatever the issue, we’ll find and fix it quickly.
