Furnace
A furnace is a type of forced air central heating system that heats the air in your home. This process involves a few steps in order to regulate the temperature and keep your home comfortable. Here’s how a furnace works:
- The heating cycle begins as soon as the thermostat determines that the temperature in the room is below whatever temperature you’ve set on the thermostat.
- Once this occurs, your furnace will start the inducer fan, which will pull enough air into the unit to establish combustion airflow.
- After proper airflow is established, the gas valve opens to permit gas to flow through the burners where it is ignited by either a spark of the heat from the igniter. (In older models, there is a “standing pilot” which is a small flame that burns constantly to light the gas.)
- Once the flame is lit, the spark or igniter is extinguished, and the gas will burn for approximately two minutes before the blower starts. This allows the heat exchanger to warm up so no cold air is distributed throughout the house.
- The air is drawn in through the return ducts and the blower pushes the air over the heat exchanger, warming the air.
- The warmed air is pushed by the blower into the supply ducts to be redistributed back into your home. This process is often repeated numerous times before the desired temperature is reached.
