Difference Between Gas & Oil Boilers

As a resident of the Mid-Atlantic region, you’re in a unique situation. In other areas of the country, natural gas is the go-to fuel for home heating, but natural gas has been less desirable here because of high prices. However, recent interstate pipelines developments have granted new supply sources and brought the price of natural gas down.

So now you’re wondering, when you buy a new boiler, should you switch to natural gas or stick with your oil setup? Learn how gas and oil boilers compare to help you make your decision.

Gas vs. Oil Boiler: Fuel Storage Needs

Natural gas has no onsite storage needs. You tap into the gas line whenever you need it to power your boiler. Oil requires onsite storage. If your tank is in good condition and you like the oil provider you work with, you could have a sweet setup. However, if you want to get rid of a rusty, smelly fuel tank, replacing the oil boiler with a natural gas one is your chance.

Just be aware: getting an old fuel tank out of your house is a big project. It may require you to get a special building permit, even if the tank is above ground or located outside.

Gas vs. Oil Boiler: Utility Line Requirements

Natural gas comes from a local utility provider. If you have an existing municipal gas line near your home you can tap into for a low price, it may be worth making the switch. However, if gas lines aren’t accessible, or tapping into one will cost a great deal or require you to tear up your landscape, it might make more sense to stick with your oil setup.

Gas vs. Oil Boiler: Water Heating Needs

Is your water heater also in need of a replacement? You may be interested in upgrading your electric water heater to a gas-fired version, which is more affordable to operate. Having two reasons to pursue connecting to a gas line could help justify any associated costs.

Be aware that you can also purchase an oil-fired water heater, which produces high amounts of hot water but generally costs more to operate than a natural gas water heater. For your consideration, you can also equip your oil or gas boiler to heat water for you.
