When Do You Need Furnace Service?

As we mentioned, furnaces should operate quietly for most of their 10–15 year life span. There are, however, certain things that can go wrong with your furnace and cause you to need furnace repairs, including:

Your furnace isn’t producing any heat – this is more common at the beginning of the heating season (and can be prevented with a preseason furnace tune-up). If you’re not getting any heat from your furnace, make sure the thermostat is set to HEAT mode and is set to the right temperature. If the thermostat is set up properly, you may just have a tripped circuit breaker, a blown fuse, or your pilot light could be out. If your furnace isn’t creating heat, give us a call to get it fixed quickly.

Your furnace isn’t producing enough heat – if your furnace is producing some heat, but you feel like it’s not as much as usual, first check your filters and make sure they’re clean—you may need to replace them. If changing the filters doesn’t fix the problem, call Arctic Air Conditioning for furnace repairs—your gas burners may need to be adjusted.

Your furnace cycles on and off frequently – short-cycling can be caused by a number of things, from an oversized furnace or undersized ducts to clogged air filters that cause the motor to overheat. The blower fan seems to be running constantly – if your blower fan seems to run nonstop, make sure the fan setting on the thermostat is set to AUTO instead of ON. How long is my repair going to take?

Depending on the complexity of the repair and whether appropriate parts are readily available, your furnace might be up and running within a few minutes of a technician’s arrival. If the repair requires significant amounts of work, or if the part is not immediately available, your repair could require a few hours or a return visit. We won’t be able to know exactly until we see your furnace and identify the problem — but in most cases, your furnace will be working within the day.

Should I repair or replace my furnace?

As a rule of thumb, if you have a modern furnace and it hasn’t needed repairs in the past, you’ll be well served by a repair service. On the other hand, if your furnace has required repairs in the past, or if it’s old enough that sourcing parts is difficult, components are failing more frequently, and efficiency is significantly lower than modern units, we recommend a replacement.

In some cases, a furnace in otherwise good health may require significantly expensive repairs, in which case you will need to decide whether to pay for that repair or invest that money into an upgrade; this decision probably comes down to how satisfied you are with your current unit. Of course, if your unit needs repairs because it’s overworked due to being too small or otherwise inappropriate for your home, that should also shape your decision.

How can I avoid needing more repairs?

Regular maintenance of your furnace will greatly extend the life span of the furnace, the same as any other complex mechanical device in your home. At bare minimum, homeowners should keep up with filters and check for visible problems on a monthly basis. You should also seek professional maintenance on a seasonal or annual basis, to tune up your system and keep it running as optimally as possible.

A minor annoyance that would be eliminated by basic maintenance can gradually develop into a small problem with your system. A small problem ignored can grow into a big problem or damage other components, such that you have lots of small problems all at the same time — this will cost you big. So keep up with your furnace’s health and eliminate problems as soon as they become apparent.

Is there anything I should check on my own?

Before you assume a serious problem with your furnace, make sure the pilot light is lit, all appropriate breakers are flipped, and the intake isn’t blocked by a clogged air filter or some other obstruction. These are very common sources of furnace trouble that can be readily corrected by a homeowner. Of course, if pilot lights keep going out or breakers keep flipping, these indicate serious problems that demand attention as well — even if your furnace works for a while each time.

How much is my repair going to cost?

The price of a furnace repair is difficult to gauge without seeing it, same as the repair time. If a problem only requires technical know-how or the right tool and a few minutes of work, that will cost significantly less than a problem that requires heavy labor and new parts to replace a failed motor or heating element. In general, the more long-standing a problem and the older your furnace, the more expensive a repair threatens to become.
