Why Is R-22 Refrigerant Being Phased Out & What Is Replacing It?

For many years, R-22 was the most common refrigerant used in air conditioners in the United States. However, it is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon, and that type of gas is believed to be linked to Earth’s eroding ozone layer. In fact, manufacturing systems using R-22 were banned by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2010, and by 2020, the production of R-22 itself is required to end.

So why is this important to homeowners? If you have a system that uses R-22 refrigerant—such as those manufactured before 2010—it is going to start costing more and more to repair or recharge. According to current estimates, the cost of R-22 is going to increase approximately 5 percent per year until it is completely phased out.

What Is the R-22 Replacement for New ACs?

The R-22 replacement is R-410A (also called Puron), which is recognized by the EPA as being an ozone-friendly, chlorine-free refrigerant. So what are the benefits of the switch and the R-22 phase out? Puron systems are:

  • Eco-friendly
  • More efficient and less costly to repair and maintain, compared to their R-22 counterparts
  • Less likely to overheat and burn out because they run at a cooler temperature
  • Up-to-date with current technology and use the latest synthetic lubricants
  • Constructed with thicker shells, reducing the likelihood of leaks

What does that mean for you as a homeowner if you have an R-22 air conditioner? It could mean it’s time for an AC replacement. Not only do homeowners who own R-22 systems pay more for repairs and maintenance, they also miss out on performance and energy efficiency. Consult with an HVAC professional to determine if it would be more prudent for you to replace your outdated system.
